Holiday tree card set

Welcome back to my blog!  It's time for another Scrappy Tails Crafts project!  Have you seen all of the fantastic new products in the Snow Globe Flurries holiday release?? It's jam-packed with holiday goodness.  If you can't wait and want to check it right now, head HERE.

It was so hard to decide what to work with first but I absolutely LOVED the Winter Snow Trees dies.  I thought they would be perfect for making a set of cards!  Let's take a sneak peek at the set.

Alrighty, let's jump into a brief tutorial.

Step 1: Cut lots of trees out of assorted colors.  My choices were vintage inspired.

Step 2 : Cut lots of trees out of white cardstock.

Step 3: Glue tree layers together.  Add sparkle to the "snow" areas and let dry.

Step 4: Create textured backgrounds.  I used the Slimline Brick Background die to cute out a thick piece of cardstock.  Then I used embossing paste through it.  As soon as it was dry, I splattered each piece with coordinating color splatters and metallic paints.

Step 5: Adhere backgrounds to solid, coordinating cardstock.  For the panel layers I used the Slimline Pop Up Box dies.

Step 6:  Add trees!  The smaller tree is popped up with foam tape and I added tiny tree trunks.

Step 7: Add sentiment and complete cards.  I used the Hot Foil Bold Christmas Sentiments and foam tape on the back.

Step 8: Admire your handiwork!

PDO Mixed Media Monday

Oh my goodness!  I can't believe how quickly December is passing.  I've got lots of wrapping to do and I haven't made a single card to send.  I *might* be a bit behind.  However, I've got some crafty goodness to share with you.  Today's theme for Polka Dot Orchard is a mixed media project.  It is definitely not my strong suit but I'm giving it a go!

I'm using two different PDO stamp sets, Home for the Holidays and Swinging by with Holiday Cheer.

I printed the truck from Home for the Holidays onto a Copic friendly cardstock.  I had an idea to create my winter sky background using Distress Inks and blending tools.  Now I need a a mask for my truck.  This is a pretty easy fix.  I printed the truck out again on regular copy paper and cut it out.  I applied a thin coat of Tombow Mono Multi liquid glue to the back and spread it out with my finger.  I let it dry for a few minutes and now I've got a mask!  I put it over the truck on the card and started blending with Distress inks.  I started with Chipped Sapphire, then moved to Seedless Preserves, Victorian Velvet and finally Antique Linen.

The background blend isn't perfect but no worries!  I love the reveal when you take off the mask.  It looks so crsip and clean!

And now for some coloring magic with Copic markers and some background splatters.

Now you're probably wondering where the multi media aspect comes in.  Let's take a look at my finished card first.

For the tree in the truck I added dabs of white embossing paste.. While it was still wet I added glitter.  For the truck windows I added glossy accents.  I set this aside to dry and went to work on the sentiment. 

I took a label shaped chipboard and smooshed on clear embossing ink.  Then I sprinkled it with Wow Midas Touch embossing glitter.  Learn from me, emboss from the backside if you don't want a glitter explosion.  LOL!  I added another coat of embossing ink and the Midas Touch glitter.  I heated it again until it was all melted.  I added some purple ribbon through the holes and tied a knot on one side.  Then I wrapped it around the back of the panel and tied it through the other hole.  I added foam tape to the back of the tag and attached it to the card.  Next I printed the Merry Christmas sentiment out and cut it into an oval to match the tag.  I added foam tape to the back and added it to the tag.  I then added the whole panel to a gray card base.

There ya go!  One of my first attempts to create a multi media card.  How'd I do?  Here's a few more pictures of the finished card.

Miss you

Howdy and hello my crafty friends! I'm enjoying my extra time off from work by completing yet another Altenew Academy class. I'm making it a priorty to continue my work towards my Altenew Educator Certification! The class I just finished was called Celebrations: Stencil Techniques and the teacher was Laurel Beard. Seriously a great class! Yet again jam packed with all sorts of ideas on how to use and create your own stencils!

I started by using the Doodled Lace Cover die to cut out a thick piece of cardstock as well as a thin piece.

I took the thin piece of cardstock and taped it down to a scratch piece of paper.  I liberally sponged on Victorian Velvet distress ink until I happy with the color.  I don't reach for this color very often but I don't know why.  It's gorgeous!  I took a pair of scissors and started cutting apart all of the floral elements. 

Back to that thick piece of cardstock.  I taped it down to a gray piece of cardstock.  I dug around and found my stash of embossing paste.  I squished my Hickory Smoke distress ink pad down on to my glass mat.  Then I took a scoop of paste out and mixed it with the ink.  I did this several times until the paste was as dark as I wanted it to be.  I used a plastic spatula to spread this over the top of the die cut cardstock.  I worked quickly so the paste wouldn't dry our before I was done.  Once it was smoothed out I removed the die cut paper and cleaned up my tools.  This is very important when working with embossing paste!

I set this aside for a little while until the paste was dry.  Then I started fitting the cut out floral pieces into the embossing paste piece.  I glued the pieces in place with a liquid glue.

Here it is with all of the pieces glued in place.

I took the completed panel and attached it to a white, side fold A2 card base.  I took my Wink of Stella marker and went over the leaf and heart shapes.  Now...how to add a sentiment.  I didn't want to cover up the cool background!  I found a small I Miss You sentiment in the Hug Me set from Altenew.  I masked off the "I" and stamped it on white paper with Hickory Smoke Distress Oxide ink.  I sprinkled on clear embossing powder and melted it with my heat tool.

I cut it down to a small strip and angle cut the right side.  I put foam tape on the back and glued it on the background.  I really love the look of the embossing paste!  I tried to capture the dimension in the photo below.
